Preventing Osteoporosis

Osteoporosis is a common condition that weakens bones, making them fragile and more likely to break. Unfortunately, it often goes unnoticed until a fracture occurs, typically in the hip, spine or wrist.

Although osteoporosis is more common in older women and those with a family history of it, the condition is largely preventable by following these tips:

  1. Ensure you are getting enough calcium and vitamin D in your diet.
  2. Engage in weight-bearing exercises regularly to strengthen bones.
  3. Avoid smoking and limit alcohol consumption, as they can weaken bones.
  4. Get regular bone density screenings to monitor your bone health.
  5. Maintain a healthy body weight.
  6. Consider taking supplements if you are unable to get enough calcium and vitamin D through diet alone.
  7. Be cautious with medications that can weaken bones.
  8. Talk to your primary care provider about any family history of osteoporosis and discuss potential risk factors. If you don’t have a primary care provider, click here for options.
