We love summer! Warm temperatures and sunny skies make it the perfect time to get outside and take your kids for a swim. But while playing in water is a favorite summer pastime, swimming has its dangers. Read the following tips to prevent child drowning and ensure swim safety:
- Always supervise children when they are in or near water.
- Keep rescue equipment, such as a life preserver, near the pool.
- Teach children to never run, push or jump on others near water.
- Teach children to swim at an early age.
- Use life jackets or other flotation devices when appropriate.
- Install barriers around pools and hot tubs, such as fences and gates.
- Teach children to stay away from pool drains and suction outlets.
- Ensure all pool and hot tub covers are in good condition and functioning properly.
- Make sure adults are trained in CPR.
- Enter the water feet first. Injuries can occur when kids jump or dive headfirst into shallow water.
